I requested a name change, but my application does not reflect it.

If your name is showing properly in your portal but not on your application, the system has been updated and your information has been changed. Your application will be reviewed with your correct name.

I don’t remember my username. What should I do?

You will use the same username and password that you have for your MyCUBoulder account. Or if you have created a prospective student portal or online application account for any other University of Colorado campus, you should use the same username and password for the CU-Boulder application as well. If you don’t remember your username, please do not create a new account. Instead, complete the MyCUBoulder support form and an admissions representative will e-mail you your username.

I don’t remember my password. What should I do?

You can reset your password anytime by clicking here. Follow the instructions on both password reset pages. (Your password will not be e-mailed to you but will take effect immediately). Please write down your password and keep it in a safe place.

Why do you need my social security number?

Your Social Security Number (SSN) is not required on the admission application; however it is used by the Office of Admissions for record keeping and credential matching purposes. However, your SSN is required and should be included on your admission application if you are applying for financial aid and/or using the Colorado Opportunity Fund (COF). Your SSN will be used to match against the systems at the state and federal level for authorization of any state/federal financial aid and the COF.

My name and/or address has a character with an accent in it. Should I enter that in the application?

No, please leave the accent off the letter. Instead, enter the character as if it had no accent.

I am a first name user; my family name does not appear on my passport. How should I indicate this on the application?

Please enter the place holder “FNU” (“First Name User”) without quotation marks in place of your family name to indicate to us that you do not use a last name. This not only helps us identify you in our system, but if you are admitted it is how your name needs to appear for immigration purposes. This placeholder is recognized by the U.S. government as such for students who do not use a last or family name.

What if I don’t know what I want to major in yet?

If you’re not sure what to major in, select Open Option under the College of Arts and Sciences. You will be able to declare a major in your first or second year. If you are leaning toward a specific major, we encourage you to select that on your application. You can always change your major later. You may also apply for an open option major in the College of Engineering or Leeds School of Business if you are interested in engineering or business but are unsure of which specific major to choose.

How do I apply for pre-med, pre-health, pre-nursing, or pre-law?

If you are interested in any of these fields, you may apply to any major. Preprofessional advisors will be available to help you meet the undergraduate requirements needed to apply for medical school, law school, etc.

How do I apply for education?

The School of Education offers licensure programs in elementary, secondary, and K-12 music education. The licensure fields in secondary education include English, foreign language, mathematics, science, and social studies. Teacher education at the undergraduate level must be combined with a bachelor’s degree program. If you don’t already have a bachelor’s degree, you should apply to a major of interest that will supplement your teaching goals. Later on in the application, you will be invited to declare your interest in Teacher Education.

How do I apply for journalism?

Select 'Journalism and Mass Communication' under the career drop down menu. Then select one of the five majors available in journalism: advertising, broadcast news, broadcast production, media studies, or news editorial. If you are unsure of which journalism program you want to major in, you should select "open option". You will have the option to change your major upon enrollment to the university. Later on in the application, you will be invited to declare an additional field of study to accompany your journalism major. The Bachelor of Science Journalism degree now requires both a journalism major and an additional field of study (such as English or art history) with work comparable to that for a major. If you do not select your additional field of study on your application, you will be asked to do so during orientation.

Can I apply for more than one major or degree?

You can only select one major/degree on your application. If you are offered admission at CU-Boulder, you will be admitted to one major and one degree program. After you enroll, you may consider pursuing a double degree, double major, or minor.

What months do the fall, spring, and summer terms begin?

CU-Boulder operates on a two-semester academic calendar. The fall semester begins in late August, and the spring semester begins in mid-January. Summer session lasts ten weeks; courses meeting for shorter periods (one to four, five, or eight weeks) are scheduled during the ten-week session. Beginning your degree program in the summer as a freshman or an international student is not recommended.

I am an international student applying to CU-Boulder for only a semester or year but was told to complete this application. What program should I select?

You should select the program and plan that interests you most. If you’re interested in Physics you should apply to the College of Arts and Sciences, Physics major. If you’re interested in Engineering you should apply to the appropriate major within the College of Engineering and Applied Science. You can find a complete list of our programs and plans (majors) on our website.

What if I need to update the personal information that is grayed out?

Certain personal information in our database cannot be changed online. This would include a name change, name misspelling, social security number, etc. Call the Office of Admissions at 303-492-6301 to change any information that is grayed out on the online application.

Why do you need my social security number?

Your Social Security Number (SSN) is not required on the admission application; however it is used by the Office of Admissions for record keeping and credential matching purposes. Why do you need my parents’ information?

What if my parent’s occupation is not listed?

Please select ‘other’ in the drop down menu.

I am a non-traditional student. Do I still need to submit my parent information?

Yes, we still use this information even if you are an adult or an emancipated minor. This information is collected primarily for demographic and statistical purposes. It also helps to understand your situation better and to get a full picture of you as a person for a more holistic review of your application beyond just academic data.

I’ve applied for permanent residency, but haven’t yet gotten it. Which answer should I select on the application?

If you (or your family) have submitted the I-485 form (Application for Permanent Residency) and you’ve received a receipt for such, then you would be considered a domestic application. If you do not yet have a receipt for this form you are an international student.

I am not a U.S. citizen, but I don’t have a visa yet. Which answer should I select on the application?

You should select the visa type you are planning to apply for. If you do not know which visa type to apply for, select F-1 under ‘Current Visa Type’, as it is the most common visa type for international students seeking a full degree. You may then leave the ‘Issue Date’, ‘Expiry Date’, and ‘Immigration Number’ blank.

What if I am a dual citizen?

If you have dual citizenship and the U.S. is one of the countries, indicate ‘U.S. Citizen’. If the U.S. is not one of them, select the country that will issue your visa.

What if I am considering, or in the process of, changing my visa type?

If you’re changing or considering changing your current visa type please enter the information for what you have now, and please contact us to let us know more about your visa status at intladm@colorado.edu.

Regarding question 1, what if I’m not sure yet whether I will attend a Colorado college or university?

Even if you do not know which university you will actually enroll in, you should answer yes if attending a Colorado college or university is a likely option for you.

Regarding question 2, what if I will be traveling or temporarily spending time outside of Colorado the summer after I graduate high school?

As long you are not permanently moving away from Colorado after graduation, you may answer yes.

In the “Previous Education Data” section, what does “MAPS-HEAR” mean?

If you see MAPS_HEAR” listed under your “Previous Education Data”, it means you have already submitted your academic history/high school subjects in a previous application for admission to any University of Colorado campus. You do not need to fill out the information again.

Why do I need to list ALL schools I’ve attended?

It’s important for us to get a complete and accurate picture of your academic history. Failure to list and submit transcripts from all institutions previously attended is considered to be a violation of academic ethics and may result in the cancellation of your admission or dismissal from the university.

What if there is no place to enter my high school information?

Check to see if you have checked the checkbox underneath the Previous Education Data section. If so, uncheck the box and the High School Information section should reappear.

I am trying to indicate my graduation date, but 2012 is not available. What do I do?

We apologize for this glitch. Please either select 2011 or leave it blank. We will be able to reference your intended graduation date on your official transcript when it is submitted.

What if my institution is not listed?

When completing the High School Information section in the application, include all schools that you have attended as a student. When adding a school, once you complete the Country and State drop boxes, if your school is not listed in the School drop box please click on the link to the right of the box that reads ‘My school is not listed’. Complete the requested prompts. If you are home-schooled or completed the GED please click on the link to the right of the Country drop box that reads ‘Home-school, GED or Non-US Institution.

What if I haven’t met all the MAPS requirements? Can I still be admitted to CU?

You may be admitted to CU-Boulder even though you have not met all the Minimum Academic Preparation Standards (MAPS) requirements. If that is the case, you will be required to complete the appropriate MAPS courses once you are enrolled, and the credits may be applied toward graduation. You may also complete missing MAPS course work in high school, at other colleges or universities, or through approved credit-by-examination programs. MAPS requirements not completed in high school or college are factored into the admission decision.

I am a transfer student. Do I still need to submit my high school transcript and/or complete the high school subjects section?

Yes. All applicants must submit an official high school transcript, regardless of the number of semester hours of college work completed.   If you have earned a GED instead of graduating high school, you must submit official GED scores, plus an official transcript of any high school work completed. Minimum Academic Preparation Standards (MAPS) requirements also apply to transfer students, so you must also complete the Academic History section, which breaks down your high school subjects.

I am a non-traditional student. Do I still need to complete the high school subjects section and submit a high school transcript?

Yes, Minimum Academic Preparation Standards (MAPS) requirements still apply to you unless two or more years of your high school course work was completed at a non-U.S. high school. A high school transcript is also still required, and you can use your high school transcript to recall the high school subjects you completed. To do this, we recommend having one transcript directly to you and one sent directly to CU-Boulder.

I am a U.S. citizen but have previously studied in another country. Do I need to complete the MAPS section?

If two years or more of your secondary schooling was completed in a non-U.S. system you are exempt from the MAPS requirements, and you may leave the fields in this section blank.

I am an international student, but I attend high school here in the United States. Do I need to complete the MAPS section?

Please complete the MAPS section if you attended a U.S. high school for two more years.

What if I am a transfer student and have completed some of these requirements in college rather than in high school?

Students who have MAPS deficiencies from their high school transcript must submit a MAPS appeal to the Office of Admissions. Unfortunately, MAPS deficiencies cannot be evaluated based on a student’s college transcript. The Office of Admissions updates MAPS units from high school transcripts only. Any college work taken to satisfy MAPS deficiencies will be evaluated through the College of Arts and Sciences using a College MAPS Appeal Form. Please contact the Dean’s office for more information.

What are some examples of the subjects that are listed under the Academic History section?

Unspecified Academic Elective: Includes art, music, drama, journalism, yearbook, newspaper, and computer science courses.

English: Includes communication, composition, debate/speech, and literature courses. NOTE: Yearbook and newspaper are academic electives.

Unspecified Advanced Math: Includes college preparatory math courses such as trigonometry, precalculus, analytical geometry, elementary functions, and math analysis.

Unspecified Math: Includes statistics.

Unspecified Natural Science with Lab: Includes anatomy, physiology, botany, ecology, zoology, genetics, and other lab sciences.

Unspecified Natural Science without Lab: Includes physical science, general science, earth science, astronomy, geology, and other non-lab science courses.

Geography: Include any courses that cover regional or world geography and/or course work examining social, political, and cultural processes that create geographical worlds such as urban growth, geopolitics, agricultural development, and population dynamics.

What if I took Algebra 1 or a foreign language in middle school?

You may include first level foreign language/algebra 1 courses completed in 8^th grade.

Is it okay if my transcripts arrive before my application is submitted?

Yes. We hold any transcripts that arrive before your application and will match them to your application once it is received. To ensure that these transcripts are properly matched with your application as quickly as possible,  please include your current and any former legal names as well as any other identifying information (date of birth, etc.) on both your application and transcripts.
 

Why do you need employment information?

Submitting your employment history is optional, but it helps provide a more holistic picture of you as an applicant.

Should I include volunteer experience in this section?

Please include volunteer experience in the activities and leadership section.

What if I have more than five jobs to include in my employment history?

If you would like to include more than five jobs, it is possible to list them on a separate document and upload it to the Upload Documents section under Miscellaneous Document. You may also just include your five most recent positions rather than listing all jobs you have had.

What if I haven’t received any academic awards or honors? Will I still be considered for admission?

Yes, having academic awards or honors is not a requirement for admission. You will still be considered for admission based on other factors provided in your application.

What if I have more than five academic honors to include on my application?

If you would like to include more than five academic honors or awards, you may list them on a separate document and upload it to the Upload Documents section under Miscellaneous Document.

What if I have more than five activities to include on my application?

If you would like to include more than five activities, you may list them on a separate document and upload it to the Upload Documents section under Miscellaneous Document.

What does “nonacademic” mean?

“Nonacademic” refers to disciplinary action that occurs for reasons of conduct as opposed to reasons of academic performance. A nonacademic suspension does not include a suspension for low grades, but it does include a suspension for academic dishonesty such as plagiarism or cheating.

What information should I include in my explanation?

All explanations should include the approximate date(s) of the probation(s)/suspension(s)/expulsion(s), the sanctions issued (e.g., two-day suspension, five-day suspension, expulsion, etc.), and a description of the specific actions that led to the sanctions. Please note that it is important to describe the specific behavior that led to the sanctions. A description such as “I was suspended, because I broke school rules” is not sufficient. Incomplete descriptions will delay the processing of your application.

How will my probation/suspension/expulsion impact my application?

Applicants answering “yes” to this question will undergo an additional review to assess the seriousness of the offense and to determine the likelihood of the applicant engaging in similar conduct at CU-Boulder. Applications in this category take a little longer to review, but once the offense is cleared by the reviewer, it has no further impact on the application.

How long will it take to review my probation/suspension/expulsion?

It depends on a number of factors, such as the severity of the offense, how recently it occurred, and whether such an offense would also carry sanctions here at CU-Boulder. Many applications with a “yes” answer to this question take no more than an extra day or two. Some take longer and require extra information. You may be contacted by an official in the Office of Admissions or in the Office of Student Conduct. If this is the case, respond promptly to expedite the processing of your application. Note: Reviews of the files of applicants who answer yes to this question are not conducted until a complete application and all of the required credentials have been received.

What kinds of offenses do I need to disclose?

Applicants who have a pending criminal charge OR have ever been convicted of a crime, made a plea of guilty, accepted a deferred judgment, been adjudicated, or been required to register as a sex offender must disclose this information.  Misdemeanor traffic offenses (e.g., speeding) are exempt.

How will my criminal history affect my application?

Applicants answering “yes” to this question will undergo an additional review by a committee to determine whether the applicant’s offense(s) should have an impact on their admission decision. Factors included in the review process include the seriousness of the offense(s), number of offenses if there are more than one, and the time elapsed since the last offense.

How long will it take to review my criminal history?

It depends on a number of factors but in most cases this internal review process takes less than two to three weeks to complete. Cases that take longer result from a delay in acquiring the necessary information from outside agencies (e.g., court records, police reports, background checks) before the information can be reviewed by a committee. Note: The backgrounds of applicants who answer “yes” to the criminal history question will not be reviewed until a complete application and all of the required credentials have been received.

Is anyone with a criminal history automatically denied admission?

All applicants who have answered “yes” to the criminal history are reviewed on an individual basis however the following backgrounds would likely result in disqualification: a history of violence against persons; sexual assault; crimes involving the use of a weapon(s); serious or repeated drug or alcohol offenses; and/or offenses that include egregious theft, burglary, or damage to property.

What are my options if my file is denied based on my criminal background?

You may contact the Office of Admissions at 303-492-6301 to discuss your options.

What if I answer “no” even though I have a criminal history?

It is advised that all applicants disclose their background in the application.  If a student is found to have provided inaccurate information on the application, they may be subject to disciplinary action – including dismissal from the university – due to a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. For more information on the Student Code of Conduct visit www.colorado.edu/studentaffairs/studentconduct/code.html.

What are the SAT and ACT? Are they required?

The SAT and ACT are standard aptitude tests used for college admission decisions throughout the U.S. CU-Boulder requires either SAT or ACT scores from all domestic applicants for freshman admission. Transfer students, you must submit SAT or ACT scores unless you have completed 24 or more semester hours (one year of full-time study) of transferable college or university work at the time you apply. The ACT will be accepted with or without the Writing Test. SAT Subject Test scores are not required.

Request that the testing agency submit your scores directly to the Office of Admissions. For more information on the ACT, go to www.act.org/aap. For more information on the SAT, go to www.collegeboard.org. CU-Boulder's CEEB school codes are:  SAT - 4841 and ACT - 0532.

What are the TOEFL and IELTS? Are they required?

The TOEFL and IELTS are two different English language proficiency tests accepted by CU-Boulder as proof of English proficiency. Proof of English proficiency is required for immigration purposes for all international student applicants unless:

• you have completed at least one year of full-time academic study at a U.S. institution or at an institution in a country where English is the native language (i.e., Australia, U.K.) at the time you apply;
• if English is your native language; and/or
• you are from one of the following countries: Australia, Belize, Botswana, Canada (except Quebec), Commonwealth Caribbean, Ghana, Great Britain, India, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Zimbabwe.

Request that the testing agency submit your scores directly to the Office of Admissions. For more information on the TOEFL, go to www.toefl.org. The CU-Boulder college code for the TOEFL is 4841. For more information on the IELTS, go to www.ielts.org. CU-Boulder does not accept any other tests as proof of English proficiency.

What are CU-Boulder’s test score codes for submitting ACT and SAT scores?

What are CU-Boulder’s test score codes for the TOEFL and IELTS?

The CU-Boulder school code for the TOEFL is 4841. IELTS does not have school codes. When requesting your IELTS results to be sent to CU-Boulder, have it sent to the following address:

If I am taking an ACT or SAT exam in October, am I still eligible for early notification?

If you have taken the ACT or SAT previously and are taking the test again in October, you must send in your previous scores to complete your application. Once your new test scores from the October exam are received, we will add that information to your application and consider that in the review process. When registering for the test, you must indicate that you want your scores sent to the University of Colorado Boulder so that we receive them as soon as the scores are available. If you are taking the ACT or SAT for the first time in October and still wish to be considered for the non-binding Early Notification deadline, you must complete the rest of your application by December 1 and we will begin the review of your application once your ACT or SAT test scores have arrived. On the day of the test you must indicate that you want your scores sent to the University of Colorado Boulder so that we receive them as soon as the scores are available. CU-Boulder's CEEB school codes are:  SAT - 4841 and ACT - 0532.

I am a transfer student. Do I still need to send you my ACT/SAT scores?

I am a nontraditional student. Do I still need to submit test scores?

If you are applying for freshman admission, yes, you must submit ACT or SAT scores. If you are applying as a transfer student, you must submit SAT or ACT scores unless you have completed 24 or more semester hours (one year of full-time study) of transferrable college or university work at the time you apply.

How does the online recommendation form work?

You provide us with the name and e-mail of your recommender(s) on the online application, and then we submit an e-mail to your recommender(s) on your behalf. The e-mail links them directly to the online recommendation form. They simply fill it out and submit the form online. We will receive it automatically, and you will be notified by e-mail that we have received the recommendation.

Do I have to use the online recommendation form if I already have a letter of recommendation?

No, you do not have to use the online recommendation form, and if you choose not to, simply leave this section blank. If you already have a letter of recommendation written, you can upload it in the "Upload Documents" section of the online application. If the letter is not already written, using the online recommendation form makes it easier on you.

Is my recommender notified of the application deadline?

They are not notified of the specific deadline. An e-mail will be sent to your recommender with a link to an online recommendation form. If they do not complete it after a certain amount of time, they will also be sent a reminder e-mail to encourage them to complete the form. We recommend notifying your recommender(s) that you have listed them as a recommender and reminding them when the form should be completed by.

Will I be notified when my recommender(s) submits the letter of recommendation form?

Yes, you will receive an e-mail when we receive a recommendation form for you.

How do I submit a letter of recommendation if I have already submitted my online application?

Letters of recommendation may also be mailed directly to the Office of Admissions, either before or after you submit your application. Please ensure your full legal name and birth date are included at the top of the letter.

Can I submit more than three letters or recommendation?

We recommend only three letters of recommendation in order to limit the amount of materials the admissions committee reviews. Your application should have three strong recommendations as opposed to additional recommendations.

I have updated my personal essays. How can I submit my new essays?

You may e-mail your updated personal essays to apply@colorado.edu. Please include your full legal name and date of birth.

What file type should my essays be in?

You can upload either Microsoft Word or PDF files through the ‘Upload Documents’ section of the online application. If you are e-mailing your personal essays to apply@colorado.edu, you can either copy and paste them into the body of your e-mail or attach them as a Word document or PDF. Please include your full legal name and date of birth.

What if I am not ready to submit my essays yet?

You can still submit your application without uploading your personal essays. The essays are still required and should be e-mailed to apply@colorado.edu. Please include your full legal name and birth date. Your personal essays must be received by the application deadline in order for your application file to be complete.

Which of the ‘Upload Documents’ fields are required?

While none of the forms have to be submitted online, there are certain forms that are required for your application. If you choose not submit them online through the ‘Upload Documents’ section, you must mail, fax, or e-mail the forms according to the instructions on the form.

I don’t have Adobe Reader on my computer. I have a Mac and use Preview. Can I still complete the forms?

If you do not use Adobe Reader, the file will not save correctly and may come back blank. Please download the latest free version of Adobe Reader to complete the forms.

Do I need to complete the Tuition Classification Form?

This form is required only if you are claiming in-state tuition classification and responded ‘No’ to any of the questions in the ‘Residency’ section on the ‘Additional Information’ page. The form should be submitted before the application deadline in order for your application to be considered complete. Out-of-state and international students do not need to complete this form.

Do I need to complete the Criminal History Supplement Form?

This form is only required if you answered ‘yes’ to the first question (regarding criminal history) on the ‘Non-Academic Suspension and Criminal History’ section on the ‘Background Information’ page. The form should be submitted before the application deadline in order for your application to be considered complete.

Do I need to complete the Non-Academic Suspension Form?

This form is only required if you answered ‘yes’ to the second question (regarding non-academic suspension) on the ‘Non-Academic Suspension and Criminal History’ section on the ‘Background Information’ page. The form should be submitted before the application deadline in order for your application to be considered complete.

Do I need to complete the Application Fee Waiver Request Form?

You should only complete the Application Fee Waiver Request Form if you qualify for the fee waiver per the instructions on the form. The form should be submitted before the application deadline in order for your application to be considered complete. If you are not eligible for the fee waiver, you must pay the mandatory, nonrefundable application fee.

Can I upload my portfolio or a photo of myself in this section?

We do not recommend sending a portfolio (unless requested) or a photo of yourself with your application, as we do not use these items when reviewing your application. Please do not upload such items to your application.

Will I get a receipt for my payment?

If you submit your payment by credit card or electronic check, you will be e-mailed a receipt for payment as soon as the transaction is approved.

Can I use my parent’s credit card or bank information (for e-Check) payment?

Students paying the application fee by credit card or submitting the confirmation through e-Check are able to use another individual’s credit card and bank information as long as the individual has given permission to do so.

I don’t live in the U.S. What is my best payment option?

Paying by credit card is your best option if you do not live in the U.S. or have a U.S. bank account. If you do not have a credit card or prefer not to pay that way, your next best option is to get an international money order made payable to University of Colorado. Print and fill out the Application Fee Payment form, attach your payment, and mail it to the Office of Admissions at:

What if I am not ready to pay my fee at this time?

If you are not ready to pay at this time, you may save your application and log back in when you are ready to pay. Or, you may select the ‘By mail’ option and pay the application fee by submitting a check or money order made out to the University of Colorado. Print and fill out the Application Fee Payment form, attach your payment, and mail it to the Office of Admissions (or to the School of Education for applicants to the Teacher Licensure program). 

I also applied to another University of Colorado campus. Do I still need to pay the application fee?

Yes, if you are applying to another University of Colorado campus in addition to CU-Boulder, you must submit a separate application, official credentials, and appropriate fee to each campus. You will use the same log in credentials for any of the three campuses to log in to the applications, but you must complete a different application for each campus.

I am currently enrolled at another University of Colorado campus. Do I still need to pay the application fee?

Students who are attending another University of Colorado campus do not need to pay the application fee.

I had an error or clicked ‘cancel’ during the payment process. When I go back to my application it says “payment pending”. How do I submit my payment to complete my application?

You will no longer be able to access the online payment system once your application status says ‘payment pending’. Instead, you may either call the admissions office at 303-492-6301 and provide your credit card details over the phone or submit your payment by mail. If you choose to pay by mail, print and fill out the Application Fee Payment form, attach a check or money order made payable to University of Colorado, and mail it to the Office of Admissions (or to the School of Education for applicants to the Teacher Licensure program). 

The payment session has timed out. What do I do?

When you are trying to pay and your session times out please contact the Office of Admissions at 303-492-6301. Unfortunately you cannot go back to the previous page, so a payment will need to be made over the phone. Your payment was successful if you received a confirmation via email.

How do I know if my application was submitted?

When the application is submitted you will have the opportunity to view a PDF copy. You will also receive an e-mail notifying you that your application has been submitted. You will receive a second e-mail shortly afterward to notify you that your application has been uploaded into our system. At that time, you can continue to check the status of your application in your MyCUBoulder Account.
