5 Favorite Classes I've Taken at CU
Hello Everyone!!!
I am so sorry for the large break in posts, I have been absolutely swamped with my LSAT work! I take it in four days...the 11th, EEEEEK! Wow, it's hard to think that after all of this practice ( I have been taking one test per day for the past 4 weeks) it will soon all be over! I am currently suffering from the reality that I am graduating in less than four months and it is all coming WAY TOO QUICKLY! As I need a break from my crazy study schedule I decided to make a list of my top five favorite classes I took at CU (in no particular order).
1. Violence Against Women and Girls (Joanne Belknap)
This class is quite depressing but I loved it, being a sociology major I have always been interested in the criminal justice system and how this has affected women, and this class was just it. Not only an amazing set of classes, but Joanne Belknap is one of the most intelligent and invested professors at CU. She is extremely dedicated to what she teaches and is always ready to help you understand something that is not clear. I learned more in this class about the justice system and how it affects different groups of people just by listening to her lecture than I could have by reading how ever many articles are available on the subject. Joanne has become a mentor of mine and is always encouraging whenever I need help with anything. She is such a role model and I would encourage anyone to take a class with her...except for next year (she is on sabbatical).
2. Intro to Anthropology Part I and II (Dennis Van Gerven)
I love anthropology and I could possibly say it is all because of my cousin Alex. When I got to CU as a freshman, my cousin Alex was a senior, we wanted to take a class together…we both needed to fill our science sequence credits so we decided it would be Intro to Anth. We sat front row two semesters in a row together learning all about how primates evolved and how humans evolved. We learned all about Van G’s Sir Arthur Connan Doyle theory of the Piltdown skull. Although it was a 500-person lecture I went to office hours and was actually able to see some of the mummies that Professor Van Gerven excavated. I will attribute my love for Anthropology to Dennis Van Gerven’s dedication to teaching. Both semesters I was in his class on the last day he received a standing ovation.
3. Internship in Sociology (Hillary Potter)
I think it is extremely important to take advantage of the recourses that CU has to offer for each of the majors. In sociology we are able to hold a job as an intern and receive credit for it. I have been in this class for two semesters now learning about how to apply what I’ve learned in my sociology classes to the practical world. I work at the DA’s office and as I have blogged before, I am learning so much, it is so helpful and I feel so grateful that I was given this opportunity. Professor Potter has been extremely helpful in giving us ways to learn more about our internships through the different sociological theories.
4. Rhetoric of TV (Dalyn Luedtke)
I am currently in this class, which is an upper division writing class; we examine how rhetoric is used in television and how it has changed over the years. Although we are only three weeks in, I really have enjoyed it so far. We blog about our different interests in television and examine how these shows get across the messages that they intend to. Dalyn is awesome at helping us balance the changes in social media as well as the traditional writing styles that are both important in today’s society.
5. Constitutional Law II (Doug Costain)
Due to my love for law, this was one of my favorite classes I ever took. It was a very challenging class that was difficult especially having no background in a case law class but it really pushed me to understand that I wanted to go to law school. Doug Costain is the Pre-Law advisor and approaches this class in a very hands off manner; it is centered around a heavy amount of reading and student ambition but it was a perfect fit for me. I am glad I expanded my class load past my majors and branched out to include this class.
These are just some of my favorites but here is a link to the CU course catalog:
