Mathematics

Research interests include algebra, algebraic geometry, differential equations, differential geometry, logic and foundations, modern analysis, number theory, probability, and topology. MS students may minor in any department where mathematics plays a significant role.

Degree Details: 

MA
Requires 30 semester hours of approved graduate study with a presentation of a mathematics project or thesis before a faculty committee.

MS in Applied Mathematics
Requires 30 hours of graduate course work, at least 18 hours of which is in the math department, and includes two full-year sequences. One of these must be MATH 5600-5610: Numerical Analysis. At least 6 hours of graduate work must be in an approved area of application and include a full-year sequence. You may minor in any department where mathematics plays a significant role. The student must make a presentation of a mathematics project or thesis before a faculty committee.

PhD
Requires 30 hours of approved graduate study and 30 hours of dissertation credit, successful completion of preliminary and comprehensive examinations, and a successful dissertation defense. A PhD student is required to make written translations of mathematical literature in one of the following languages: French, German, Italian, or Russian.

Admissions Requirements: 
  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  2. Have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0.
  3. Have demonstrated mathematical maturity and accomplishment roughly at the level of a successful mathematics major at CU Boulder. Must also demonstrate mathematical potential: success in courses in advanced calculus and abstract algebra help demonstrate this potential.
  4. GRE scores: General and mathematics subject specific exams are mandatory.
  5. TOEFL scores: International students are required to take an English proficiency exam.
  6. Submit three letters of recommendation from accredited mathematicians.

Financial Support: 

Most financial support is for teaching assistantships, which include tuition waivers. There are some research assistantships and some fellowship awards.
