German Studies

The department offers an interdisciplinary MA in German studies, focusing on German-speaking, central European society from the Enlightenment to the present. A new PhD program has been added with new details forthcoming. In addition to expertise in German literature, the faculty’s interdisciplinary strengths include comparative literature, philosophy, social and political theory, film, cultural studies, political philosophy, and intellectual history. To get a better idea of the department’s areas of specialization, prospective students are encouraged to take a look at the list of recent graduate seminars and at the profiles of the graduate faculty and expanded graduate faculty. The faculty works closely with students to design their own course of study. Most German MA students receive a teaching assistantship and tuition waiver. The graduate associate chair of German welcomes email inquiries about the program. Degree Details: 

MA
Requires 24 semester hours of approved course work, 6 thesis hours, and successful defense of a master’s thesis. Typically students take 9 semester hours of course work outside the German studies program. With approval of the graduate committee, a student may present 30 hours of course work without a thesis to fulfill the MA requirements.

Admissions Requirements: 
  1. Hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  2. Have an undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.75.
  3. Have a BA in German or a related field with proficiency in the German language.
  4. Provide three letters of recommendation.

Applicants should hold a BA in German or a BA in a related discipline with BA proficiency in the German language.

Financial Support: 

Most of our MA students receive a full tuition waiver and a stipend. Forms of support include teaching assistantships (with stipend of at least $15,283 and full tuition waiver), Graduate School fellowships, and Max Kade Fellowships.
